Hours later, after they’d laid waste to the Russian encampment and Captain Cryer had called the report in to Fairbanks, Stillman sat at the ready with the rest of the Marines, bumping south along the Alaskan coast, putting as much distance between them and the Russians as possible.

Red Hawk and the combined tank crews were fifty yards ahead, his P-10’s armor scored with hundreds of scratches and scorch marks, a testament to the fight they’d been through. Not long after the attack, the Russian ships had turned and departed, and Stillman hoped that with the location reported, the US Navy could finally score a win by sinking them. The Russian armored convoys would be stranded without any way to get fuel or regroup, leaving them to be slowly strangled by US-Canadian forces.

None of that was Stillman’s concern. His only focus was protecting his crew, of which he’d lost four, and ensuring Red Hawk returned to Fairbanks alive. There’d been a moment when he’d wanted to pursue the Russian Commander, but Red Hawk had talked him out of it and refocused him. And as he listened to the Colonel go back and forth with Fairbanks, the weight of the mission and bravery of his Marines, and the quick thinking of Captain Cryer, hit him full on. He gestured to Cryer to mute their internal microphones, and as soon as she did, he turned to address the crew.

“I just wanted to say that your actions today, though we lost four good Marines, saved the lives of so many more. We just took on one of the most feared and revered Russian commanders and kicked his ass.”

The Marines nodded and grinned, displayed a mixture of regret and victory, shaking hands and consoling each other.

“I’m proud of all of you. You fulfilled your duties to the letter. The names of the dead will not be forgotten, and they’ll be given a proper burial once we reach Fairbanks. Thank you, Marines.”

A soft murmur resonated inside the cabin, and the Marines returned to their thoughts. The four bodies were tied to the roof in body bags, frozen stiff in the cold. And while it seemed like an insult to transport them in such a way, Stillman hoped that when he died in combat, his corpse could ride home on the back of a mighty P-10.

“Colonel Stillman?” Cryer gestured to a blinking switch and raised her eyebrows in question. “There’s a message coming in on an unencrypted line.”

“Patch it through and include Red Hawk.”

“Yes, sir.”

Cryer hit a few buttons and flipped the blinking switch. “This is US military mobile enforcement,” she said. “Who’s broadcasting this message?”

A low, resonant chuckle vibrated across a static-filled communication line, the crackle and pops sizzling around the sound and giving it an ominous tone. “This is Commander Orlov of the Russian Armed Forces. I hope I’m speaking to Colonel Red Hawk and Lieutenant Colonel Stillman.”

Stillman shook his head but didn’t say a word, and to his credit, Red Hawk didn’t, either.

“That is what I thought,” Orlov said, his thick accent dripping with contempt.
